The Lester Vaughan School was opened October 7, 1997, it was officially known as the St. Thomas Secondary School. I was officially opened and renamed The Lester Vaughan School, in honour of Mr. Lester Vaughan a former prinicpal of Holy Innocents Primary School and author of the National Pledge, Mr. Lester Vaughan. Mr. Vaughan also thought in St. Lucia for ten (10) years and served as a headmaster, while there. He was trained at Booker T. Washington Tuskegee Institute in the U.S.A. He also served as an Education Officer in Barbados until retirement in 1970.
The first staff and students of the school were those of the former St. Leonard's Girls' School, which was closed in 1997. In addition, a complement of boys was admitted to the school in First Forms whrn it was opened in 1997, thus making the school a co-educationsl institution.
The school is located in Cane Garden, St. Thomas close to a fast developing industrial area and caters to students of ages 11 to 17 years. It is a co-ed school which seeks to develop both the academic and sporting abilities of the students. Of course there are several other extra curriculum activities in which students are encouraged to participate.
The location of the school offers a panoramic view of the southern part of the island, with a view spanning from parts of St. George and St. Thomas all the way to the south western part of St. Michael. With a role of approximately 950, the school boast of a well trained staff of around 70 teachers and more than twenty support staff members. With wide and varying skills and abilities among staff the students continue to benefit beyond mere academics even as they seek to chart their own course in life after school.
